ChatGPT Ads in 2026: how they work, what they cost, and whether they're worth it.

Self-serve access opened to every U.S. business on May 5, 2026 — and pricing has already moved twice since launch.

OpenAI began showing ads to logged-in ChatGPT Free and Go users on February 9, 2026, then opened a self-serve Ads Manager to U.S. businesses of any size on May 5, 2026 — eliminating the original $50,000 minimum spend entirely and bringing CPMs down from roughly $60 to around $25. Targeting is matched to conversational context rather than keywords, and it's a separate track entirely from getting cited in ChatGPT's organic answers, which can't be bought at any price.

How targeting actually works

ChatGPT Ads don't work like a keyword auction. Instead, sponsored responses are matched to the conversational context of what someone is actually asking about — a more contextual, less brittle form of targeting than bidding on a fixed keyword list. Ads appear below ChatGPT's response, clearly labeled “Sponsored,” with a headline, short description, and an optional square image. They only reach Free and Go tier users; Plus, Pro, Team, Business, and Enterprise subscribers never see them.

What it actually costs, and how fast that's changed

Pricing has moved twice in under four months. At the February 2026 launch, ads ran roughly $60 CPM with a $200,000 minimum spend — effectively limiting the platform to large advertisers. By the May 5, 2026 self-serve launch, OpenAI had removed the spend minimum entirely, and CPMs had dropped to roughly $25. CPC bidding launched alongside self-serve access, running in parallel with CPM buying, with OpenAI's recommended starting bid at $3 to $5 per click.

Given how fast this has moved already, treat any specific number here — including these — as worth reconfirming before committing real budget. A platform that changed its pricing model twice in four months is not one to plan a full-year media budget around without checking current terms first.

Is it worth testing yet?

For many businesses, yes — with real caveats. The barrier to entry that excluded all but the largest advertisers is gone, and conversational targeting is a genuinely different mechanism than keyword bidding, which makes it worth a defined test rather than a default “wait and see.” That said, it's still an early platform: measurement tooling, audience scale within the Free/Go tiers, and competitive dynamics are all going to keep shifting. We evaluate every new AI ad platform the same way — test with a defined budget and honest expectations, and say plainly when a channel isn't ready for real spend yet, rather than pushing it just because it's new.

What ChatGPT Ads has nothing to do with

It's worth being precise about this, because it's a common point of confusion: ChatGPT Ads has no bearing on whether ChatGPT cites your business organically when someone asks it a question in your category. There is no paid placement option inside ChatGPT's, Perplexity's, or Google AI's organically generated answers as of 2026 — that visibility is earned through generative engine optimization (GEO): technical foundation, content built to be cited, and off-site authority. See our full breakdown in How to Get Cited by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini & Perplexity. Confusing paid placement with organic citation is one of the fastest ways to either overpay for ads that were never going to move the citation needle, or under-invest in the GEO work that actually builds it.

Questions we hear...

How does ChatGPT Ads targeting work?

Ads are matched to the conversational context of what a user is actually asking about, rather than keyword bidding. They appear below ChatGPT's answers to Free and Go tier users, clearly labeled “Sponsored.” Paid subscribers never see ads.

How much do ChatGPT Ads cost?

Roughly $60 CPM with a $200,000 minimum at February 2026 launch, dropping to roughly $25 CPM with no minimum by the May 5, 2026 self-serve launch, plus CPC bidding around a recommended $3–$5 starting bid. Worth reconfirming before committing budget.

Is ChatGPT Ads worth testing yet?

For many businesses, yes, now that the barrier to entry has dropped substantially — but it's still early, so test with a defined budget and honest expectations rather than betting a core channel on it.

Do ChatGPT Ads help my brand get cited in ChatGPT's organic answers?

No. There's no paid placement option inside ChatGPT's organic answers as of 2026 — that has to be earned through GEO. Ads and organic citation are two separate games.
